Something very neat happened this morning.

5th-grade students in Ms. Durbin's homeroom received 'Caught Ya Being a Leader' tickets as a reward for showing leadership at Northside. These tickets are coveted and represent a chance to win a prize in Friday's 'Caught Ya Being a Leader' drawing.

At about that same time, those same students realized it was Ms. Durbin's birthday this weekend. The group quietly decided to write Mrs. Durbin's name on all the tickets and enter her name into Friday's drawing. Each student agreed this would be a fitting tribute to one of their favorite teachers.

Here's where it gets interesting...

Ms. Durbin found out that the students wrote her name on all the tickets (psst, 5th graders are NOT very good secret keepers, and word travels fast), and Ms. Durbin decided she would repay their kindness to her. Ms. Durbin secretly set out to purchase 40+ birthday cookies and drinks for all 5th-grade students to enjoy at the end of the day.

At contest drawing time, Ms. Durbin's name was drawn, and she showed up with those birthday cookies and drinks. The 5th graders were very appreciative and very surprised by the gesture. At 2:45 pm down the hallway were cheers of celebration and happy birthday singing. Today, 5th graders learned lessons about kindness, leadership, and living open-handed with others.

It's proof that at Northside, we are "More than a Classroom, More than a Teacher, More than a Student... We are FAMILY."
